Canonteign Manor

Beautiful 16th Century Manor House, now available for hire for retreats and wellbeing breaks.

Description

At the time of the Doomsday Book, The Manor Estate was known as Teigna and was granted by William the Conqueror to the French Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Beck in Normandy.
In 1268 it was turned over to the Black Cannon of Merton Abbey, hence the name Canonteign. They owned it until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1540 when it passed to the Duke of Bedford, Lord Russell. He soon sold it to John Berry of Berry Pomery, and in turn it was inherited by the Davey family, who were wool merchants from Crediton, and who built the present house in 1542.
In 1812 Sir Edward Pellew, later Lord Viscount Exmouth, purchased the manor and the old house was reduced to a farm after 1828 when Exmouth built Canonteign House close by. It was then restored by Lady Exmouth in the 1970’s
