Hazelwoods Eco Retreat Hut, Isle of Mull - for solo retreats and couples

An off-grid Hebridean island escape for one or two people. Take time out in a wild and beautiful place to reconnect with nature and yourself..

Description

Nestled beside a hazel woodland with views of moorland and sea, our little retreat hut is the perfect place to hide away. The beautiful sandy beaches of the Ross of Mull and Iona are easy to find, with wonderful opportunities for wild swimming, kayaking and beachcombing. Or leave your car and walk from the hut, along steep cliffs with views of Staffa, Gometra and Iona, and the chance to spot otters, seals and dolphins. Sitting quietly on the steps in the evening you will be visited by deer and hen harriers. On rainy days stoke up the woodburner and settle in for a day of reading and watching the weather pass by. Or book a longer stay for a creative retreat. Compost toilet; rainwater shower; working croft.

Minimum stay five nights but there is no maximum!

Your Hut

You will stay in a cosy, well-insulated wooden hut lovingly built by your hosts. It has a log-burning stove, drying area, sofa, and double bed on a platform. Cooking and showering are in a separate hut, as is the compost toilet. There is a small deck outside for sitting on to watch the sun go down. Logs, linen, bedding and towels are provided, and the kitchen is well equipped.

On Your Doorstep

Right on your doorstep is our family run croft with pigs, hens, ducks and a vegetable garden, somehow surviving despite the wildness of the landscape and the winter winds. You are welcome to walk anywhere on the croft. You can also easily walk off in any direction to explore the local scenery, without the need to get in your car. Loch Scridain is a stone throw's away with views of Ben More and Burg, Gometra and Staffa. You may also spot dolphins, otters, seals and sea eagles.

Local Area

The hut itself is off the beaten track and you will feel very private. However, you are also a short drive away from the villages of Bunessan and Fionnphort. It's also not far to the beautiful sandy beaches of the Ross of Mull - Ardalanish, Uisken, Knockvologan, Kilvecheon and Fidden. Ardalanish also has a woollen mill. You can view the stunning coastline from a boat with trips to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles. Or visit Iona for the Abbey, pretty shops and lovely beaches. Local social enterprise Bendoran Watersports offers kayaking and sailing lessons for the more adventurous.

Packages

Stays are for a minimum of five nights as we believe that if you come for a shorter stay there is not enough time to really switch off your mind and relax. The longer the better – stays of more than a week are also encouraged. Once you arrive and settle in, you won't want to leave! Your package includes everything you need for self-catering. We leave you to plan your own time but are happy to suggest places to go, whether you want to swim, walk, lie on the beach, lose yourself in nature and meditate. Whatever you need to leave feeling refreshed and renewed.

Directions and Travel

Take a ferry from Oban to Craignure - remember to book! Leaving Craignure turn left towards Fionnphort and Iona. Drive for approximately 50 minutes before you come to a cross roads at the bottom of a hill marked Ardtun to the right and Lee to the left. Take the turn to Ardtun. - drive slowly and use the passing places. After a mile or so you pass a house on the left called Keill’s Cottage. Shortly after this is an un-signposted right turn - take this turn towards a green shed with the magnificent, volcanic Burg in the background. Follow the road down to an open gate beside a small white house. Go through this gate and up the rough track - drive carefully to save your car. Near the top of the track is a timber clad house. Park in the gravelled area and come and knock on the door!
